The park was used as a public space for cricket and carnivals etc, in 1838 onwards, after a row of poplar trees were planted, (they are no longer in existence, sadly ). In the 1880's more improvements were made with the planting of lime trees and addition of seats, footpaths etc.
On the death of Queen Victoria it was named Victoria Park.(1901)
In the 1930's work was commissioned to be done by the unemployed and soldiers returning from the war. They built the bowling green, pavilion, the football pitch and tennis courts, a putting green and cricket pitch and also the boating pond !
The park was then officially opened in 1935 for the silver jubilee of King George V.
Cool huh?
